Key Components of DHCP
DHCP Server
- The DHCP server is a computer or network device responsible for allocating and managing IP addresses.
- It listens for DHCP requests from clients and responds with appropriate configuration information.
DHCP Client
- The DHCP client is a device (computer, smartphone, etc.) that requests network configuration information from the DHCP server.
- When a device connects to a network, it sends a DHCP discover message to find a DHCP server.
DHCP Lease
- When a DHCP server assigns an IP address to a client, it does so for a specific duration known as the lease time.
- The client must renew the lease before it expires to retain the IP address.
IP Address Pool
- DHCP servers maintain a pool of available IP addresses that can be assigned to clients.
- The server assigns an IP address from this pool to a client when requested.
DHCP Process
DHCP Discover: When a device joins a network, it broadcasts a DHCP Discover message to identify available DHCP servers.
DHCP Offer: DHCP servers respond with a DHCP Offer message, providing an available IP address and other configuration details.
DHCP Request: The client selects one of the offered IP addresses and sends a DHCP Request message to the chosen DHCP server.
DHCP Acknowledge: The DHCP server acknowledges the client’s request by sending a DHCP Acknowledge message, confirming the assigned IP address and additional configuration settings.
